Citizen KIDS! (3-String ELECTRIC Guitars)

Citizen Kids ELECTRIC Guitars?

The idea of making a kids guitar has been on my heart for some years now... ever since my wife, Christine, and I started furniture shopping when our firstborn, Isaac, was still in the womb. I remember seeing all the little tables, chairs, cubbies and things while walking through BuyBuyBaby (baby/toddler store) and thinking how I'd love to make some little guitars with the same or similiar design aesthetics and materials.

As we embark on our first batch of 3-string electric guitars, it's my hope that each child who receives one of these guitars will be encouraged and filled with joy as they develop their skills and start making music. I pray they are a blessing to the families and the churches as well. Ultimately, if these guitars can help kids and their personal relationship with God, then that's a win - praise the LORD, and amen!

The Specs - Why Only Three Strings?

I began my career in guitarmaking in 2006 and my focus was always on hard rock, metal and custom builds. Mostly pro-level stuff. So, I wasn't really paying attention to kids guitars, but I was still somewhat aware of what was going on in the industry in general as a person in the guitar business. I always viewed the kids guitars as mere toys, BUT when Loog came out with their 3-string acoustic guitars, I remember thinking "now that is something I can get behind..." (Loog is a kids guitar company). Back then, I was younger and single and had no personal need or desire to purchase one, I just thought Loog got it right and their guitars were worthy of being called a guitar. I even recommend it to one of the deacons at my church as he had a couple young kids who were getting into their first musical instruments. I loved how a 3-string guitar could simplify things and meet young children where they're at, enabling them to simply play, develop their musical skills (muscle memory, rhythm, etc.) and have fun. But kids guitars are still just that - they're kids guitars. By design, they're quite entry level, relatively low-priced and not exactly the kind of guitar I've honed my craft on over all these years to say the least.

But, for me, it isn't all about business. It's about doing something for the children in our churches and homes that can bear fruit. Because I think that Loog discovered a great formula with their 3-string guitars, and God has given me the talent and heart to be able to make guitars like these, too, and so in a way, it is an act of obedience and worship for me. At the end of the day, I also just want to do it, especially with my boys being 2 and 4 years old now :-D

I've never made a kids guitar before, but I think I'm in a good position to give it a try!
